TH Shashikala Maduwanthi Kumarasiri, who is sitting for the GCE Ordinary Level examination next year, has produced this soapstone.
With this invention, she has won many national and international competitions and exhibitions.
Shashikala Maduwanthi Kumarasiri said :
“I live in Karandeniya, Galle. The cinnamon industry is the main occupation of people in this area. I have always thought of a way to reduce the environmental problems caused by the accumulation of wastewater in cinnamon oil extraction. As a result, the manufacture of this soapstone was made possible.
This soap can be used as a disinfectant for mosquitoes, ayurvedic treatments, and various skin ailments. This soap can be used to cool the body during and after use.
In the extraction of cinnamon oil, I used the wastewater, one milliliter of cinnamon oil, and the ingredients used to make soap in general. This can be sold to the consumer for much less than the price of a regular cinnamon soap.
This year I was able to win the jury special award at the International Young Scientists Conference in Malaysia this year and the All Ceylon Silver Medal at the Sahasak Innovation Exhibition and Competition in Sri Lanka.
Teacher Ramani Priyanka, my sister TH Shanika Maduwanthi Kumarasiri and schoolmate MA Jayani Lakmali helped me with the science of my school. I am looking forward to improving the specification of the soap and make another product based on the wastewater that is discarded after cinnamon extraction, ”she said.
